(Bakersfield, CA) – The San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority (SJJPA), which manages the Gold Runner intercity rail service in Central California, announced today the expansion of its station food truck program following the successful completion of a pilot program at the Bakersfield Station. The food truck program, which introduced a new on-site dining option for passengers, visitors, and members of the surrounding community, will be continued at the Bakersfield station and expanded, with Fresno identified as the next station for implementation and additional locations to be considered in the future.

“Bringing food trucks to the Bakersfield Station, an important gateway for our riders, offered a creative approach to improve the overall station experience,” said Chris Orlando, CEO of SJJPA. “This pilot is an important step in enhancing the passenger experience both on board and at our stations as we continue working toward future food and beverage enhancements.”

The pilot program brought a rotating food truck presence to Bakersfield Station, providing travelers with convenient access to food and beverage options while waiting for Gold Runner trains and Thruway buses. The initiative was designed to enhance the passenger experience by adding a new amenity at the station while also supporting local small businesses.

The completed pilot allowed SJJPA to assess passenger demand and evaluate operational considerations for on-site food service at the station. Based on the success of the pilot, SJJPA will continue offering food truck service at Bakersfield Station, with space available on a first-come, first-served basis for participating vendors. The success of this program will directly support the planned rollout of food truck service at the Fresno station and help inform potential expansion to other stations in the near future.

Bakersfield Station serves as the southern anchor of the Gold Runner corridor, connecting passengers from across the San Joaquin Valley to destinations throughout California via rail and Thruway bus service. The pilot program represents another step in SJJPA’s efforts to make stations more welcoming and convenient for travelers.
